The bracket expert listed eight SEC teams as “in” for the NCAA Tournament, which will begin after conference tournaments are completed this upcoming weekend. Currently, the SEC is tied with the ACC and Big 12 for the most teams included within his latest projection for the field of 68. But he considers Alabama to be one of the last four teams to make his projection. Texas, USC and UCLA also are listed in that group.
SEC teams will have a final chance to make a quality impression at the conference tournament, which is scheduled to begin Wednesday in St. Louis. Chances are, the SEC will end up as one of the top conferences with the most teams included in the NCAA Tournament field when the bracket is announced Sunday. Lunardi projects that the Big East will place six teams into the NCAA Tournament. The Big Ten and Pac-12 follow with four projected teams each.
Time is running out, so teams must make the most of their chance to shine in the conference tournament.
Here’s a look at each SEC team he projects to make the NCAA Tournament, along with the predicted seed and opponent:
Joe Lunardi’s Bracketology projections for the SEC
|SEC TEAM||PROJECTED SEED||PROJECTED OPPONENT|
|Alabama||No. 11 in East Region||UCLA in play-in game|
|Arkansas||No. 7 in East Region||Providence|
|Auburn||No. 3 in South Region||Charleston|
|Florida||No. 5 in East Region||Louisiana|
|Kentucky||No. 6 in West Region||Winner of Texas/USC|
|Missouri||No. 8 in South Region||Butler|
|Tennessee||No. 3 in Midwest Region||Montana|
|Texas A&M||No. 7 in Midwest Region||Saint Mary’s|
It would be a strong accomplishment for the SEC to place at least eight teams in the NCAA Tournament. The development would be a clear indication that the conference was able to build on the momentum enjoyed from last March, when South Carolina (Final Four), Kentucky (Elite Eight) and Florida (Elite Eight) made deep runs to remember.
Keep a close watch on the dramatic days to come in St. Louis and beyond.
