It’s the offseason, which means it’s prime time for creative lists and rankings.
CBS Sports’ Ben Kercheval published an interesting post Wednesday that ranked college football quarterbacks by various tiers. As expected, there are interesting SEC mentions that create room for debate.
Alabama’s Jalen Hurts is included within the top tier that highlights “Heisman contenders, All-American favorites.” Georgia’s Jacob Eason falls into the “talented NFL hopefuls” tier. Arkansas’ Austin Allen, Florida’s Luke Del Rio and Vanderbilt’s Kyle Shurmur are in the “Gritty coaches’ son and/or established starters” tier. Missouri’s Drew Lock, Mississippi State’s Nick Fitzgerald, Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham and South Carolina’s Jake Bentley are in the “names to watch for a big leap” tier. Finally, LSU’s Danny Etling falls into the “jury’s still out” tier.
The entire post is worth a read, and it’s fun to see the early perceptions of these SEC quarterbacks. It will be particularly interesting to see if players such as Fitzgerald, Stidham and Bentley can make a leap this season. Their respective developments would go a long way toward lifting their programs to strong campaigns.
Hurts, meanwhile, has the potential to build on momentum from last season. The SEC’s quarterback play has been knocked of late, but there’s a chance for multiple names in Kercheval’s list to produce memorable falls.
