Congratulations, Florida and South Carolina. CBS Sports considers the Gators and Gamecocks to have had the best 2016-17 athletic year among SEC schools.
The outlet published its “Best in College Sports” honor on Friday in which Football Bowl Subdvision athletic programs were ranked using a detailed formula. Florida State came in first. But Florida was the best among SEC schools at No. 2 overall, and South Carolina followed at No. 6 to round out the conference’s representation within the top 10.

Sure, this is a fine way for CBS Sports to pass these slow summer weeks and little more. But this is more material for Florida and South Carolina fans to claim bragging rights.
There were plenty of victories for these programs in the past year. The Gators’ baseball team claimed a national title, and the women’s basketball program at South Carolina also won a national championship. Florida and South Carolina met in the Elite Eight of the men’s NCAA Tournament, with the Gamecocks advancing to the Final Four.
Enjoy those sweet memories, Florida and South Carolina fans.
