The pressure is on Auburn and Georgia. Or so says CBS Sports.
CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson published a post in which he listed the Tigers and Bulldogs among the teams in “win now” mode for next season. As described in the piece, the two programs “are among the big-time college football programs entering 2017 with a heightened sense of urgency.” Patterson notes that there’s no particular win total that will determine a successful season for the squads, but he adds “you can bet fans want to see these … teams in the mix for conference titles and, potentially, a spot in the College Football Playoff.”
Be sure to read the entire post for the reasoning behind the teams’ selection. Auburn being featured isn’t surprising, given the anticipation after the Tigers’ 8-5 record in 2016 and a Sugar Bowl berth. Many eyes will be on coach Gus Malzahn to see if he can make Auburn a national title contender once more.
But Georgia’s inclusion is a head-scratcher. Kirby Smart’s young talent from the most recent recruiting class will need time to develop. And the Bulldogs closed 8-5 in Smart’s first year, so it’s not like Georgia tanked under him in 2016. There’s curiosity to see how quarterback Jacob Eason will do in his second season. But Georgia seems to be at least another year or two from serious SEC title and national championship contention.
Still, the post is quality offseason reading material.
