Was the SEC the fourth-best conference this season?
That’s the argument made by CBS Sports’ Ben Kercheval, who placed the league behind the Big Ten, Pac-12 and ACC in a college football conference power rankings.
You can see the full post with explanations here, and there are interesting tidbits highlighted. Kercheval writes, “The rankings are a summary of the regular season, not a projection of which conferences will dominate bowl season.”
Alabama is given big-time credit in the post, with the Crimson Tide mentioned as “unquestionably the best team in college football.” But Kercheval writes that “the rest of the conference simply didn’t match up.”
Lists like this always produce fun debate. Even the most hard-core SEC fans must admit that the conference was down this season outside of Alabama’s dominance.
But is the league worthy of a less-than-impressive No. 4 ranking? That’s debatable.
It will be fascinating to see if the SEC is considered stronger at this time next year.
