Verne Lundquist’s last college football season continues to near its end.
The 76-year-old commentator for CBS has called sports for more than five decades, and will continue to call college basketball and golf until next summer.
Recently, Lundquist spoke in Birmingham, Ala., according to AL.com’s Drew Champlin, reflecting on his long career and discussing what’s next for him.
“(It’s) pretty emotional,” Lundquist said to Champlin. “Every week, it’s a little nostalgic and sentimental. Two days ago, we were in Knoxville and you never know when I’ll ever get back there. Each week, it’s challenging.”
Lundquist’s next move won’t be quite as fun for the longtime CBS commentator.
“I’m going to have back surgery,” Lundquist said. “Isn’t that a great substitute? I’ve got to have back surgery in September. It’s six months rehab. I’ll be sitting in my living room in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, watching Brad [Nessler] and Gary [Danielson] and saying, ‘Why’d you say that?'”
Nessler is replacing Lundquist beginning next season.
