After a wild weekend — led by Auburn’s beatdown of former No. 1 Georgia — we knew there would be a shakeup in the College Football Playoff rankings.
While the Alabama Crimson Tide are unsurprisingly No. 1, the SEC team making the most notable move up the rankings was — you guessed it — those Auburn Tigers. In the latest edition of the rankings, the Tigers came in sixth, one spot ahead of the team they just beat: Georgia. Other SEC teams making an appearance in the Top 25 were Mississippi State and LSU.
Though Hocutt did not hit on the SEC in his interview with ESPN, he did touch on a couple of other topics. First, Hocutt was asked what the most debated topic among the committee was. He responded by saying that the main point of contention was between teams one through five, specifically the decision to rank Clemson ahead of Miami.
“Both are very similar and have an elite defense,” Hocutt said. He then added that Tyrone Willingham, the former Notre Dame coach and selection committee member, was so enthused about watching Miami that he wanted to put on the now-famous turnover chain.
Hocutt specifically cited Clemson’s early season win against Auburn as a big reason why it was ultimately ranked No. 2.
