Kirk Herbstreit dropped the name of an interesting coach who could be hot soon.
On Saturday afternoon, with Iowa State beating Texas Tech in the second half, the ESPN analyst pleaded for athletic directors “thinking of making a new hire” to go straight to Cyclones coach Matt Campbell. Check out his strong endorsement below.
Dear AD’s thinking of making a new hire I’ll save you your coaching search firm fee-go DIRECTLY to Ames, IA and get Matty Campbell FAST!!

Shortly after, Iowa State came up with a great response.
No, please don't do that. 🌪🏈 https://t.co/D7yXOqPsxu

Of course, the SEC could have multiple openings soon. It will be interesting to see if Campbell receives any looks from SEC athletic directors. Before Saturday, he led Iowa State to a 4-2 record. Prior to his stop in Ames, he was Toledo’s coach from 2012 to 2015, though he also coached the team’s Military Bowl win in 2011.
It remains to be seen which jobs will open in the SEC. Ole Miss will be one. Perhaps Tennessee will be another with Butch Jones struggling in Knoxville.
Campbell is doing good stuff with Iowa State, for sure.
