On Wednesday, Alabama and Texas announced that they’ll take part in a home-and-home series during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The matchup is a delicious pairing between two of college football’s premier programs.
That leaves many to dream about other high-profile nonconference college football showdowns that should happen.
USA Today’s Paul Myerberg released a list of 10 nonconference college football matchups he wants to see soon. There’s a heavy SEC presence within his selections.
Click here to see the full post, but we’ve included the SEC mentions below.
- 10. LSU vs. Nebraska
- 9. South Carolina vs. Southern Cal
- 4. Missouri vs. Nebraska
- 3. Texas A&M vs. Texas
- 2. Missouri vs. Kansas
- 1. Alabama vs. anyone
A few of those should be familiar to any college football fan. The Missouri-Kansas and Texas A&M-Texas rivalries were cornerstones of the sport before Missouri and Texas A&M moved from the Big 12 to the SEC prior to the 2012 season. It would be great if both matchups were given new life, but we must wait to see what develops in future years. In addition, Missouri and Nebraska were familiar foes during the programs’ time together in the Big Eight and Big 12.
It’s also creative to mention a possible South Carolina-Southern Cal series to settle the debate about who’s the real “USC.” Mentioning Alabama in any fashion is a smart choice as well.
The College Football Playoff committee values strong nonconference tests, so it’s likely that we’ll see more marquee matchups scheduled between premier programs in the future.
