College football rankings: Coaches Poll Top 25 features 5 SEC teams after Championship Saturday
The latest Amway Coaches Poll was released by USA Today on Sunday following Week 14 games. Five SEC teams were listed in the Top 25 after Championship Saturday of the 2017 football season.
Georgia and Auburn were the only two SEC programs in action on Saturday, as the Bulldogs bested the Tigers 28-7 during the SEC Championship Game. As a result of the win, Georgia jumped three spots from No. 6 to No. 3.
Auburn, on the other hand, fell from No. 4 to No. 8 following the title game loss.
Alabama, which did not play on Saturday, moved up one spot from No. 5 to No. 4. That’s a move Crimson Tide fans hope foreshadows the College Football Playoff committee’s selections.
LSU moved up two spots from No. 16 to No. 14. Mississippi State moved up one from No. 24 to No. 23.
South Carolina was listed among teams receiving votes.
The coaches poll, which is comprised of the votes of 65 FBS coaches, has been around since 1950. In the past, it served as a part of a formula to determine BCS rankings. But with the use of a College Football Playoff selection committee in place to determine the four teams that advance at the end of the season, it no longer plays a direct role in determining college football’s national champion.
The 2017 preseason Amway Coaches Poll placed the Crimson Tide as the top SEC team at No. 1, LSU at No. 12, Auburn at No. 13, Georgia at No. 15, Florida at No. 16 and Tennessee at No. 24.
