The latest Amway Coaches Poll was released by USA Today on Sunday following Week 8 games. Five SEC teams were listed in the Top 25 after the eighth full weekend of the 2017 football season.
Alabama remained the SEC’s top team following a convincing win against Tennessee at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide received all 64 first-place votes in the latest rankings.
Georgia maintained its No. 3 ranking in the poll through a bye week. The Bulldogs will travel to Jacksonville to take on Florida in Week 9.
Auburn bounced back from a loss against LSU in Week 7 with a dominating road win against Arkansas. As a result, the Tigers moved up two spots from No. 21 to No. 19.
LSU continued its hot streak after a disastrous nonconference loss to Troy, adding Ole Miss to its list of post-Troy victims on Saturday night. The Tigers will next play the Crimson Tide, so that hot streak will be put to the test. The Tigers jumped from No. 25 to No. 23 in the latest rankings.
Texas A&M enjoyed a Week 8 bye, but remained at No. 24 in the poll after a 5-2 start to the season. Many Aggies fans are wondering what might have been for this season as a Week 1 34-point collapse against UCLA is the only non-Alabama blemish on the Texas A&M resume to date.
Mississippi State, South Carolina, Kentucky and Florida are SEC teams among those receiving votes.
The Coaches Poll, which is comprised of the votes of 65 FBS head coaches, has been around since 1950. In the past, it served as a part of a formula to determine BCS rankings. But with the use of a College Football Playoff selection committee in place to determine the four teams that advance at the end of the season, it no longer plays a direct role in determining college football’s national champion.
The 2017 preseason Coaches Poll placed the Crimson Tide as the top SEC team at No. 1, LSU at No. 12, Auburn No. 13, Georgia at No. 15, Florida at No. 16 and Tennessee at No. 24.
