The latest Amway Coaches Poll was released by USA Today on Sunday following Week 9 games. Five SEC teams were listed in the Top 25 after the ninth full weekend of the 2017 football season.
Alabama remained the SEC’s top team and the national No. 1 choice following a Week 9 bye. The Crimson Tide, which received all 65 first-place votes, will be well-rested for a game against LSU in Week 10.
Georgia moved into the No. 2 spot following a 42-7 win against Florida in Jacksonville. Penn State, which was the No. 2 team prior to losing to Ohio State, dropping to No. 7 to help clear way for the Bulldogs.
Auburn and LSU each joined Alabama with a Week 9 bye. Auburn moved up four spots from No. 19 to No. 15, and LSU moved up three from No. 23 to No. 20.
LSU will play the Crimson Tide in Week 10, while Auburn will travel to play Texas A&M. The Aggies dropped out of the poll after losing to Mississippi State.
Mississippi State moved into the poll at No. 22 after previously being outside the Top 25.
South Carolina, Kentucky and Texas A&M were among SEC teams that received votes.
The Coaches Poll, which is comprised of the votes of 65 FBS head coaches, has been around since 1950. In the past, it served as a part of a formula to determine BCS rankings. But with the use of a College Football Playoff selection committee in place to determine the four teams that advance at the end of the season, it no longer plays a direct role in determining college football’s national champion.
The 2017 preseason Coaches Poll placed the Crimson Tide as the top SEC team at No. 1, LSU at No. 12, Auburn No. 13, Georgia at No. 15, Florida at No. 16 and Tennessee at No. 24.
