While some have touted the SEC’s demise, in the eyes of ESPN’s Football Power Index, the conference still has top billing.
With the 2017 season quickly approaching, ESPN updated its FPI numbers and rankings. A total of 6 SEC teams landed inside the top 20, more than any other conference. The ACC and Big Ten had four teams in the top 20.
Alabama was the top ranked SEC team, and the Crimson Tide came in at No. 2, just behind Ohio State. Auburn and LSU also landed in the top 10, with Gus Malzahn’s crew coming in at No. 5, while Ed Orgeron’s bunch got the No. 10 ranking.
ESPN describes it’s FPI as “a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule.”
ESPN FPI rankings for SEC Teams:
27. Texas A&M
32. South Carolina
33. Mississippi State
