It’s another installment of the way-too-early Top 25 rankings.
This one comes from ESPN’s Mark Schlabach. Similar to Fox Sports’ Stewart Mandel’s rankings, Schlabach has defending national champion Alabama in the pole position. But, that’s where the comparisons end.
Here are the six SEC teams that made Schlabach’s Top 25. The full list can be seen here.
1. Alabama Crimson Tide
6. LSU Tigers
11. Tennessee Volunteers
13. Georgia Bulldogs
14. Ole Miss Rebels
21. Texas A&M Aggies
The preseason Top 25 has lost its zest in the past two seasons, with many fans only concerned with their team’s standing by the time the first College Football Playoff ranking is released by the committee in November.
In the past two seasons alone, the SEC has had two teams — Florida (2015) and Mississippi State (2014) — shoot up the rankings after being unranked in the preseason. The Gators reached as high as No. 8 in the College Football Playoff rankings last season, while the Bulldogs torpedoed all the way to No. 1 in the AP Poll in 2014 before faltering down the stretch.
The preseason rankings could ultimately turn out to be irrelevant by season’s end, but hey, what else are we supposed to do until August?
