Florida State has settled a federal Title IX lawsuit with a woman who accused former Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston of rape, according to USA Today.
Erica Kinsman is a former Florida State student who said she was raped by Winston in 2012. The state’s attorney announced Winston would not be charged with any crimes in December 2013 after a lengthy investigation.
Florida State agreed to pay Kinsman $950,000, according to the report. The university also agreed to make a five-year commitment to awareness, prevention and training programs.
“I will always be disappointed that I had to leave the school I dreamed of attending since I was little,” Kinsman said in a statement, according to the report. “I am happy that FSU has committed to continue making changes in order to ensure a safer environment for all students.”
Florida State did not admit to liability in the settlement but settled the suit to avoid additional litigation expenses. The settlement was announced more than a year after Kinsman filed the complaint in a federal court.
After no criminal charges were pressed against Winston, he was also not found responsible of sexual misconduct following a Florida State conduct hearing in December 2014. Winston, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, is currently the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Kinsman and Winston currently have an ongoing lawsuit pending in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida., according to the report.
