Finalists for the prestigious Butkus Award, given annually to the nation’s best linebacker, were announced Monday morning. The SEC dominated the list, as four of the five finalists come from the Southeastern Conference: Kendall Beckwith (LSU), Jarrad Davis (Florida), Reuben Foster (Alabama), and Zach Cunningham (Vanderbilt). Iowa’s Josey Jewell is the only non-SEC player to make the cut.
With 80 percent of the finalists coming from the SEC, it looks like someone from the conference will join a prestigious group of former SEC Butkus Award winners. Should any of the four take home the award, their name will be placed alongside SEC greats like C.J. Mosley, Von Miller, and Derrick Thomas.
The four SEC finalists are all having standout seasons, each leading their team in tackles. Selection for the Butkus Award is handled by a panel of 51 coaches, and the winner will be announced on or before December 6.
