This is a list Georgia and Texas A&M fans would prefer to not be a part of but can’t deny the reasons for their inclusion. In this week’s Friday Five at CBS Sports, Tom Fornelli ranked the most tortured fan bases in college football. Georgia and Texas A&M came in first and second, respectively.
Rounding out Fornelli’s top five are Miami (Fla.), Oklahoma State and Oregon.
Mississippi State, South Carolina and Tennessee were honorable mentions.
Fornelli had three criteria:
- A program that wins consistently but not big enough.
- A program that has also been sub-par at basketball.
- A rabid fan base that is champing at the bit for its program’s time to come.
Georgia and Texas A&M certainly fit the bill in all of those areas.
Georgia was consistently good but not great during the Mark Richt era. Now under second-year Georgia coach Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs are in pursuit of their first national title since 1980.
Texas A&M is in an even longer national championship drought, having not won it all since way back in 1939. The Aggies have had their share of talented players, Johnny Manziel and Von Miller among them, but haven’t won a conference title since 1998, when they were still in the Big 12.
We’ll see if these two SEC teams can get over the hurdle in 2017.
