Look, we don’t mean to belabor the point, but the SEC East is really, really, historically bad this year – especially when compared with the typically tough SEC West. It’s not pretty.
So far, the East is 1-7 against the West, and the only victory came courtesy of Kentucky, against by far the worst team in the West, Mississippi State, on a last-second field goal. To be fair, East leader Florida has yet to play anyone from the other side, but Nov. 5 at Arkansas and Nov. 19 at LSU will be tall orders.
Should the East lose out, including for an eighth consecutive year in the SEC title game, it would continue the trend of declining success against the West every season since expansion in 2012. That year, the East went 7-8 against the West, then 6-9 in 2013, 4-11 in 2014 and 2-13 last fall.
The ugliest note from that awful stretch: Tennessee is 0-10 against the West since expansion, including 0-2 this year after back-to-back losses to Texas A&M and Alabama torpedoed tenuous national title hopes. The Volunteers are the only team without a single win against the West the last five seasons.
Matter of fact, it’s actually been six years (and 13 games) since they last beat a team from the tougher division: Ole Miss in 2010.
Georgia is on the other end of the spectrum, the only East team with a winning record (6-4) against the West since expansion. The Bulldogs have won at least one game against the West every year – although they’re 0-1 so far this season and their last chance is Nov. 12 against a red-hot Auburn team.
Vanderbilt also still must play at Auburn and host Ole Miss, while a 2-5 Missouri team will have to tackle Arkansas. It’s entirely possible – maybe even probable – that Kentucky will finish the season with the East’s only win over the West.
So yeah, while the division has been bad the last few years, getting worse seemingly every season, this fall might just take the cake. The cake is not good. Do not take that cake. The cake will make you sick. These lists, too:
