Hugh Freeze keeping Ole Miss focused on being “real deal”
Everyone loves an underdog, but what happens when the underdog becomes a contender?
Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze isn’t using the “eye of the tiger” phrase from Rocky III to keep his players motivated, but he is reminding them they haven’t done much of anything yet.
“The most destructive phenomenon in sports is release. The we made it syndrome. It’s typically followed by decrease in performance,” Freeze said during Wednesday’s SEC teleconference. “The leadership in our locker room, this is where you find out how serious they are about being the real deal.”
Like Rocky, Ole Miss has gone toe-to-toe in consecutive matches with a champion, but in the SEC, Clubber Lang and Ivan Drago are just around the corner.
Last season, the Rebels were able to keep their edge the week after beating Alabama and won a tough road game in Texas A&M, but Ole Miss ended the 2014 season losing four of its last six games, including a 42-3 defeat against TCU in the Peach Bowl.
Obviously, Ole Miss would like to end this season on a much higher note than last year.
