Defensive line is one of the deepest positions across college football this year, and that’s especially true for the SEC. The league had 10 players record seven or more sacks in 2015. Every single one will return in 2016.
So with preseason rankings season in full swing, SEC Network’s Booger McFarland had the unenviable task of ranking the conference’s top five defensive linemen. His list was more than a little surprising:
- Jonathan Allen, Alabama
- Bryan Cox, Florida
- Charles Harris, Missouri
- Myles Garrett, Texas A&M
- Davon Godcheaux, LSU
Excluding Tennessee’s Derek Barnett from the list entirely raised enough eyebrows. Giving the No. 4 spot to Garrett — a likely top-five NFL draft pick — gave fans even more pause.
After the segment, McFarland tweeted out his list and offered some ultra-brief commentary, including a mention of Ole Miss’ Marquis Haynes as his No. 6 SEC defensive lineman. Interesting, indeed.
