Former SEC commissioner Mike Slive died Wednesday at the age of 77.
Reaction immediately came pouring in from media and fans alike. The common thread was the impact Slive had on the conference and how it wouldn’t be what it is today without him.
Slive retired as conference commissioner in July 2015, but was influential in growing the conference, including the creation of the SEC Network. He was named to the post in 2002.
Here’s a sampling of the reaction on this sad day.

Commissioner Slive was unfailingly gracious to me over many years. Would always ask what books I had read lately and was conversant and was insightful far beyond sports. RIP and he will be missed. https://t.co/1QNERs0wLO

I am devastated tonight over the passing of my friend and mentor, Mike Slive. I knew Mike was not feeling great and, earlier this week, I wrote about his impact on my life. I shared this with Mike earlier today and wanted to share it with you, as well. https://t.co/yqiKZLjUQe pic.twitter.com/x6QhXVhS40
