Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is the hottest name in college football right now, and two SEC schools are reportedly hot on his tail.
UGA fired longtime head coach Mark Richt on Sunday, and Smart is reportedly a front-runner to land the job. He played for the Bulldogs from 1995-1998 and got his start in the coaching industry at UGA as an administrative assistant in 1999.
Florida coach Jim McElwain, who was Alabama’s offensive coordinator from 2008-2011, was asked about Smart during the SEC Championship game head coach teleconference.
“He’ll be a great head coach,” McElwain said. “He’s been trained by the best. He’s been waiting for his time.”
It seems like it’s only a matter of time before Smart is added to Nick Saban’s head coaching tree.
