BEAVERTON, Ore. — Justin Fields made his case to be named not only the best quarterback in the country but the No. 1 overall player, too.
Fields, a 5-star prospect from Harrison High School (Kennesaw, Ga.), was named the Elite 11 MVP on Monday. The Elite 11 is arguably the most prestigious award a high school quarterback can win.
One Elite 11 director told SEC Country that in the nine years he’s been working with the event, Fields is the best quarterback he’s seen.
The nation’s No. 1 dual-threat prospect spoke with SEC Country after winning the Elite 11 MVP.
“It is definitely a great feeling to know the hard work has paid off,” Fields said. “I’m just happy to be here. To be the MVP of such a great group of quarterbacks just shows you what great things God can do for a person. If you keep your faith in him and keep believing in him, he will do amazing things.”
Fields made his case for why he should leapfrog Clemson commit Trevor Lawrence as the top quarterback in the country.
“That was my intention. I wanted to be the best quarterback here,” Fields said. “That’s not my job to rank prospects, though. My job is to just play ball. The guys that do the rankings, that’s their job to dictate it.”
As for recruiting, Fields said he’s nowhere near making a final decision, but Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Southern California are the main schools in the mix.
He’ll visit Auburn on July 13 and Georgia on July 16. Those are the only visits he has set so far because he said, “Those are the two closest schools to me, so I can get to those schools easily.”
A decision could happen before the season or it could extend into the fall.
“It’s just going to happen when the time is right,” Fields said. “I’m just enjoying the process right now. I don’t know how I’m going to decide on this school. I just have to pray about it and talk to God to figure this out.”
An interesting human element to Fields — the man is a big fan of singing “girly” songs.
“I listen to a variety of music — pop music and even girly songs,” Fields said. “There’s this new song I really like — Issues by Julia Michaels. That’s my favorite song out right now. I also really like Bad Liar by Selena Gomez.”
