You might have missed it this weekend, but Kirk Herbstreit drew some ire after he sent some tweets responding to Jackson Carman’s suggestions regarding the Ohio State quarterback battle.
Carman, a 5-star prospect and the No. 1 offensive tackle and player in the state of Ohio for the 2018 class, suggested that the Buckeyes need to bench starter JT Barrett in favor of Dwayne Haskins.
Herbstreit appeared on the The Ryen Russillo Show on Thursday and didn’t hold back on his comments regarding Carman and the 5-star stigma in general.
“I’m a big respect guy. And I think some of these 5-star guys they get a little full of themselves because no body talks real to them. Everybody plays pretend because they live in a world where everyone pats them on the back,” Herbstreit said.
The ESPN commentator added that he didn’t really know he was in a ‘Twitter war’, but that he didn’t like that Carman, a recruit, was ripping Barrett’s credentials.
“I don’t even know that kid. I don’t follow recruiting , I have no idea who he is,” Herbstreit said. “I didn’t like that he thought he had an opinion about a guy who was a 3-time captain, the only one in the history of a school, and was like get him out and get my guy in.”
Herbstreit’s strongest comments came at the end, after he brought up that Carman mentioned he might be a better fit elsewhere.
“And then he says he’s gonna go to Clemson or USC. Good, that would be a great decision for you. I think it’d be better for Urban Meyer to not have a guy like that on his roster,” Herbstreit said.
Herbstreit does have a point that Carman’s comments probably shouldn’t have been publicly broadcast on Twitter. And more than makes a number of strong points regarding the entitlement of certain recruits. But these comments could prove to be disastrous if Carman ends up going elsewhere. Even if it does seem shallow to not go to a school because you got into a Twitter beef with Kirk Herbstreit.
And fwiw, almost all of the crystal ball predictions have Carman ending up at Ohio State.
