Lane Kiffin has yet to coach a single game at Florida Atlantic. But according to famed rapper Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew, Kiffin already has a decided schematic advantage over every team in the state.
Campbell, in a column he wrote for the Miami New Times, declared that Kiffin was an “offensive genius” and that the staff he has assembled at FAU should make fans take notice.
He also called Kendal Briles, whose name surfaced earlier this year in a federal lawsuit stemming from allegations of sexual assault involving football players at the school, one of the best offensive gurus in the country and adds that the hiring of Kiffin’s brother, Chris, and his father, Monte, shows that the Owls staff has great football minds and recruiters. Campbell specifically mentioned that Chris helped Ole Miss land Laremy Tunsil, one of the players whose name is at the heart of alleged NCAA violations committed by the Rebels.
The takes didn’t stop there, as Campbell said that if you put Kiffin’s staff in the ACC or SEC, it could contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
“If you put Kiffin’s staff on the right team in the ACC or SEC, it would go to the national championship playoffs,” Campbell wrote.
Just as a quick reminder, the state of Florida has Jimbo Fisher, Mark Richt, Butch Davis, Jim McElwain and Charlie Strong at its FBS schools. In terms of on-field accomplishments, Lane Kiffin might be the least accomplished coach in that group. Fisher has won a national championship, Richt won two SEC titles at Georgia, Davis laid the groundwork for the iconic early 2000 Miami teams, McElwain has won the last two SEC East titles and Charlie Strong won a Sugar Bowl at Louisville.
But Campbell ended his column stating that if Richt doesn’t win the ACC at Miami — he’s in Year 2 after taking over for Al Golden — he should watch out for Kiffin as the guy who could replace him.
Campbell has long been considered a Miami fan, dating back to the program’s success back in the 1980s. The Hurricanes won 9 games in Richt’s first season and currently have the No. 1 recruiting class in the 2018 cycle. Richt is likely not going anywhere for a while.
