As the old sports cliche goes, it’s often the games within the game that determine the outcome.
When Ole Miss faces Florida this Saturday, the one to watch will be Rebels receiver Laquon Treadwell matching up against Florida cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III.
Both players were top recruits at their respective positions in the 2013 signing class. Hargreaves committed to Florida and tried to convince Treadwell to join him in Gainesville. Ultimately, the receiver chose Ole Miss.
Saturday will not be the first time the two will line up across from one another. Hargreaves covered Treadwell in the 2013 Under Armour game, according to the Orlando Sentinel. That day, Treadwell caught six passes, but he had just two short receptions against Hargreaves, who also broke up a deep pass intended for Treadwell in the end zone.
Treadwell was reluctant to admit that the game means something more to him because of the matchup, but he did say it will be fun.
“I’m just going to do whatever I can to make our team win,” Treadwell said to reporters on Wednesday with a slight smile. “It’s going to be fun, of course, knowing the rankings and how much they hype him up, and make him feel like he is the best. He thinks he is the best, so it’s all going to be fun, and we are going to attack it just like any other game.”
Treadwell wasn’t quite as bashful when he texted Hargreaves over the summer, saying he would “embarrass [him] on the field.”
“He talked a little trash over text messages,” Hargreaves said according to the Orlando Sentinel. “I’m excited.”
