Lou Holtz has a way of piquing the interest of college football fans.
The 79-year-old retired college football coach, who spent time as the head coach South Carolina and Arkansas, has faded out of the national spotlight after leaving ESPN’s college football studio broadcast following the 2014 season.
But “Dr. Lou,” as he was often referred to during his time as a commentator, found himself in the spotlight once again for a brief moment during last month’s Republican National Convention.

The internet ran wild with speculation on why Holtz was carrying around what appeared to be a bag of Crown Royal.
On Tuesday, Holtz went on the radio with Bo Mattingly to clear up matter. As it turns out, it wasn’t whiskey at all.
Holtz says he had his medicine, cell phone, iPod and pipe in the Crown Royal bag.
