Miami defeated Duke on one of the craziest kickoff return touchdowns in college football history.
Duke scored with six seconds left to take a 27-24 lead, but Miami picked up a squib kick at the 25-yard line, lateraled it eight times and 46 seconds later Corn Elder was in the end zone for an incredible winning touchdown.
Here is the entire play:
This was Miami’s first game since firing Al Golden after a 58-0 loss to Clemson last weekend. Duke was six seconds from being 7-1.
There was lots of confusion after the play. A flag was thrown for a block in the back, and after multiple reviews the referee deemed all laterals legal, the block was from the side, and confirmed the touchdown.
After the game was over, there was some question about whether or not the officials used the replay review to overturn the penalty, which is not a reviewable play. Regardless, it will be remembered as one of the craziest endings in the history of the sport … and it is the third straight week there has been a wild ending to a game because of a special teams play. The previous two were Michigan State-Michigan two weeks ago and Georgia Tech-Florida State last week.
