After being called a “pure liar” by the mother of the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit, new South Carolina coach Will Muschamp made a phone call on Monday.
“There’s two sides to every story and it’s a little frustrating that that was said because at the time no one had contacted me about a job that I was interested in and I was interested at being at Auburn and I had full intentions of staying at Auburn University,” Muschamp told al.com’s James Crepea.
Muschamp tried to make amends with Jennifer Coney, the mother of 5-star defensive tackle Rashan Gary. Muschamp made an in-home visit with Gary last week, and told the family that he intended to be Auburn’s defensive coordinator in future years.
Muschamp was later hired as South Carolina’s head coach, and he was put on blast by Gary’s mother, who told 247sports.com’s Keith Neibuhr: “He should have been honest. He should have said, ‘Well, if I get the opportunity.’ I would respect that. I would have understood. It’s a job for them. But he didn’t. Muschamp is a liar. A pure liar.”
In fairness to Muschamp, the opportunity to be a head coach is something very few defensive coordinators would turn down under any circumstances.
