The nation’s No. 1 inside linebacker has a new leader after his official visit this weekend.
Ben Davis, a five-star prospect from Gordo (Ala.) High School, told SEC Country after his official visit to Alabama, the Crimson Tide now lead the race for his services with 10 days to go until National Signing Day.
“I saw more of what I have been looking for in a school,” Davis said. “Them and Georgia are really close together, though.”
Heading into his official visit, Davis had Georgia at the top of his list followed by Alabama. So what did the Crimson Tide do this weekend to push them over the top of the Bulldogs?
“The academic side of my visit impressed me,” he said. “I also got to see how the players react to the coaches. (Defensive coordinator Jeremy) Pruitt and I have a great relationship. He offered me at Georgia, and now that he’s at Alabama, it’s giving them the edge right now.”
With only a little more than a week until Davis announces his commitment on ESPNU, is there anything Georgia can do to retake the top spot for the five-star?
“I need to stay in contact with the coaches more,” he said. “It’s really close (between Alabama and Georgia) with me. Auburn is my third school right now. When I go there this weekend, I might like them, too, and they may jump into my frontrunners, too. I’m just taking it slow right now and seeing which school I like the best.”
One part of this weekend’s trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala. sticks out more than other moments for Davis. That was his time at Nick Saban’s house Sunday morning.
The 6-foot-3, 240-pounder was racing golf carts when another five-star prospect, outside linebacker Mack Wilson, crashed into him.
“We were racing at Coach Saban’s house and he just came up behind me and knocked into me,” Davis said. “He can’t drive.”
It’s clear that the two five-stars are close friends, so come signing day when the pair signs their names on the dotted lines for their respective schools, will they both end up choosing the same college?
“We always talk about it,” Davis said. “If it happens, it happens. I’d love to play with him. We just have to wait and see come signing day. I think we would do great together. At all of these All-American games together, we talk about playing together on the next level. It might end up happening.”
