College football fans across the country will soon find out where the nation’s No. 1 player will play college football.
Rashan Gary, a five-star defensive tackle from Paramus (N.J.) Catholic High School, tweeted that he’ll announce his National Signing Day decision live on CBS Sports Network and then answer questions from some of his Twitter followers live on air.
At this point in his recruitment, most in the recruiting industry feel like Michigan will hold a big edge when it comes time for him to announce his commitment on signing day.
His mother, Jennifer Coney, has been most impressed with Michigan’s academic pitch, and that’s a huge sticking point when it comes down to her son’s decision.
“They (Michigan) have the Ross School of Business. The way their academics is structured I just feel that the weight of the degree is better,” Coney told SEC Country in November. “That’s my feeling. I may be wrong. That’s just how I feel. I feel Michigan’s academic plan, plan for success, not even for football players but as for student body in general is just important.”
Alabama coach Nick Saban and staff paid Gary and his family a visit Wednesday in hopes of convincing him to take an official visit to Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Jan. 29. There has been no word on whether or not he will.
The Crimson Tide may not be the SEC team in best position to land him. That would be Ole Miss. In fact, Rebels four-star wide receiver commit DeKaylin Metcalf told SEC Country he thinks Ole Miss has good odds of landing the No. 1 player.
“I think it’s 50-50 between us and Michigan right now probably because we got Greg Little,” Metcalf said. “Rashan Gary and Greg Little, the two best players in the country, could play against each other in practice every day and make each other better.”
Little is rated as the nation’s No. 2 overall recruit, and the No. 1 offensive tackle. It should be noted that Little and Gary are very good friends.
Other SEC schools in the mix include: Auburn, LSU and Georgia.
Whichever school lands Gary on Feb. 3 is getting a whole lot better.
