Louisiana-Lafayette is a program familiar with the Superdome. The Ragin’ Cajuns are returning to the New Orleans Bowl after four straight appearances (and wins) in the home of the New Orleans Saints.
Southern Mississippi is coming from a very different place. Actually, the Golden Eagles were fortunate to make it to the Big Easy. First-year coach Jay Hopson’s team suffered defeats in five of its past seven games.
One team is riding a wave of momentum, the other is fighting to survive. Still, it will have been a little more than two weeks since each team’s last game. That’s a lot of time for players to rest and recharge. It’s also a lot of time for a team’s roll to slow.

New Orleans Bowl: Southern Miss vs. Louisiana-Lafayette keys to the game
Grinding against Louisiana-Lafayette’s ground game
ULL isn’t much of a threat through the air because the Ragin’ Cajuns have been streaky in the passing game. Louisiana-Lafayette’s ground game is a different matter. Running back Elijah McGuire will lead the way. While the senior’s production has been underwhelming at times this season, he’ll try to exit the program with one more win.
A forgettable quarterback has to be memorable
Southern Miss quarterback Nick Mullens (2,926 passing yards in 2016) has been a top quarterback through the past couple of seasons, but he’ll have to steal the spotlight for the Golden Eagles to be successful on Saturday. He’s missed time with injury, but if healthy the QB has to be a catalyst for his team.
