In the moments following North Carolina’s national championship victory against Gonzaga on Monday night, CBS released its annual “One Shining Moment” video to relive 2017 NCAA tournament one more time before closing the book on it forever.
And what a tournament it was for the SEC, which place five teams in the tournament. Four of them advanced to the Round of 32, three to the Elite 8 and South Carolina made it all the way to the Final Four before bowing out after a close contest with Gonzaga on Saturday. By pretty much any measure, the tournament was a huge win for the Gamecocks and the conference in general as the national opinion changed on what is largely considered a football-first league.
Those awesome achievements by Frank Martin’s squad, which upset Duke in the Round of 32 to set off a magical run to Arizona for the Final Four, were key pieces to the One Shining Moment video this year.
Florida’s thrilling overtime win against Wisconsin also received some love, along with cameos by Kentucky’s Malik Monk and De’Aaron Fox.

South Carolina coach Frank Martin became a national name for taking the Gamecocks as far as he did, SEC player of the year Sindarius Thornwell received his due on the national stage and Florida’ Chris Chiozza produced a highlight that will live on in NCAA tournament lore for years to come. And while conference power Kentucky came up just short of a Final Four appearance, it still has to be considered one of the best tournaments for the conference in recent years.
