The last two running backs to win the Heisman Trophy both hailed from the SEC and played at Alabama. And if an SEC player is going to take home the Heisman Trophy for the 2017 season, the experts in Las Vegas expect it to be a running back.
Bo Scarborugh and Derrius Guice both have 14-to-1 odds to take home the Heisman Trophy. Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts has 16-to-1 odds while Georgia running back Chubb had 18-to-1 odds. Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald has 33-to -1 odds to bring home the award. He would be the first Mississippi State player to win the award.
Auburn was also represented but it was running back Kamryn Pettway who has 33-to-1 odds. Other sports books have listed quarterback Jarrett Stidham as an option, but he is yet to officially be named the starting quarterback for the Tigers.
Guice led the conference in rushing last season, while Scarborugh had two monster performances in the College Football Playoff. Hurts was the SEC Player of the Year last season and voted First Team Preseason All-SEC by the media, as was Guice and Chubb.
USC quarterback Sam Darnold is currently the favorite according to Bovada, as he has 11-to-4 odds to bring home the award. He is followed by Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield who has 15-to-2 odds. Last year’s winner, Lamar Jackson, has the third best odds at 8-to-1. Archie Griffin is the only player to ever win two Heisman Trophies.
The 2017 Heisman Trophy will be handed out on Dec. 9.
