When most fans see their team’s punter, they’re hot too happy about it. The punter signifies that a drive has ended and the opposing will be getting the ball back.
But for five fanbases, getting to see their punter on the Ray Guy Award watch list is a good thing.
JK Scott of Alabama, Toby Baker of Arkansas, Johnny Townsend of Florida, Will Gleeson of Ole Miss and Trevor Daniel of Tennessee were named to the 28-man Ray Guy Award watch list. The Ray Guy Award is given out to the top collegiate punter every year in December. Tom Hackett of Utah has won the award for the last two seasons.
The SEC has the most punters represented on the list. Daniel and Townsend are two of the top returning punters in the country in terms of yards per average punt. Daniel finished last year No. 8 with 45.7 yards per punt and Townsend, who was a semifinalist for the award last year, ranked No. 10 with 45.4 yards per punt.
An SEC player has taken home the award twice, with Georgia’s Drew Butler winning in 2009 and Florida’s Chas Henry winning in 2010.
