There has been a lot of speculation in recent weeks in regard to who’s going to be the next coach at South Carolina.
Yet again, another big-time name has surfaced.
Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has emerged as the top candidate for the Gamecocks job, according to FoxSports.com’s Bruce Feldman.
Smart is one of the more popular names being thrown around in conjunction with the coaching vacancy. Houston’s Tom Herman and Memphis’ Justin Fuente are among the other names floated around in recent weeks. Herman has removed his name from consideration, according to a report by Yahoo Sports’ Pat Forde later in the day Wednesday.
During last week’s game against The Citadel, athletic director Ray Tanner said he expects to name a new coach in early December.
The Gamecocks are 3-8 heading into their final game of the season against top-ranked Clemson. Steve Spurrier resigned in October and interim coach Shawn Elliott is 1-4 in his stead.
