As it stands, a player can’t play a single snap of any game in a season, or else that player loses his redshirt.
A new rule could soon pass changing that definition according to a report from Football Scoop.
The definition of redshirt might soon mean a player could participate in up to 4 games and keep the redshirt and hence their full term of eligibility.
(ACFA Executive Director, Todd) Berry said this vote has been unanimous across all levels two years in a row, which never happens. “This needs to pass and it needs to pass right now,” Berry said.
The report also cites an ESPN poll which says the support is there for the move among student-athletes as well.
If the rule changes, it would mean a huge swing in how programs think about using freshmen players, but it won’t receive a vote until April according to the report.
