HOOVER, Ala. — We have a champion. Well, a preseason champion.
Th SEC media in Hoover Ala., predicted the conference champion for 2016 and Alabama is expected to take home the title for the third consecutive season. The contingent at SEC Media Days projects that Tennessee will take on Alabama in Atlanta.
Alabama, of course, took home the SEC championship last season in a 29-15 win over Florida.
Don’t put too much stock into the prediction as the media has failed to correctly predict the SEC champion 18 times since 1992. Last year, the media predicted Alabama to win the SEC West — and, inexplicably, thanks to a weird points system, predicted Auburn to win the conference. Those Tigers, of course, finished the regular season 6-6 with a near-loss to FCS team Jacksonville State.
One media member voted South Carolina and one media member picked Vanderbilt to win the entire SEC. We’re curious as to their logic, but we’ll probably never know.
Interestingly, Tennessee, the favorite to win the East Division, finished well behind LSU as the second-most likely team to win the conference title. Ole Miss, who beat Alabama in back-to-back seasons and hosts the Tide in Oxford this year with 4,000-yard passer Chad Kelly, finished sixth with just four media members predicting the Rebels to win the conference.
