Final SEC Country Power Poll: Alabama loses championship game, but far away league’s No. 1

No matter how Monday night’s College Football Playoff championship game turned out, Alabama was going to finish the season where it started: No. 1 in the SEC Country Power Poll.

The Crimson Tide are the No. 2 team in the nation though after falling 35-31 in a down-to-the-last-second thriller against Clemson in Tampa on Monday night.

The loss dropped the SEC to 6-7 in the postseason.

Alabama received all 19 first-place votes in the final SEC Country Power Poll, as expected. The panel of 19 voters kept the Crimson Tide in the top spot all season. It was every spot from 2 to 14 that provided the entertainment.

LSU and Florida had two of the league’s most impressive bowl victories. LSU hammered Louisville 29-9 in the Citrus Bowl and the Gators whipped Iowa 30-3 in the Outback Bowl. With those performances, LSU and Florida finished second and third in the final power poll.

Tennessee finished on a high note with a win against Nebraska in the Music City Bowl. The Vols tied for fourth in the power poll with Auburn, which dropped out of the No. 2 spot with its ugly 35-19 loss to Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.

Georgia picked up some momentum by defeating TCU in the Liberty Bowl and finding out that star backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel would return for another season.

In contrast, Arkansas blew a 24-0 first half lead against Virginia Tech and lost 35-24 in the Belk Bowl.
