SEC Picks: Against the Spread, Week Five
Once again here are the winning picks for this weekend in the SEC. And never forget, my opinions are given freely, which is appropriate since most of those opinions are completely worthless. The picks:
South Carolina +3 at Missouri
South Carolina and Missouri have a lot in common. Both teams play in towns named Columbia, both teams have veteran coaches, and neither team is very good. An unspectacular game was somehow made even less appealing this week when Missouri announced quarterback Maty Mauk will not be playing. Most fans have announced they will not be watching.
Auburn -20 vs San Jose State
Auburn said this week it was renewing its deal with Under Armour through 2025. Some Auburn fans have been so ashamed of how Gus Malzahn’s team has played this season they immediately inquired if the apparel manufacturer made a bag that would cover their faces. There will be no reason to hide this weekend though. Auburn will make San Jose State look the way everyone else makes Auburn look.
Arkansas +6.5 at Tennessee
This is quite the coaching matchup. Your grandmother will figure out her DVR before Butch Jones figures out the fourth quarter, and Bret Bielema seems unlikely to win another game before Kanye West is elected president. Tennessee likely gets the victory, but does not cover against the only team in the league worse than the Vols in close games.
Vanderbilt +1.5 at Middle Tennessee State
Here is the good news: Vanderbilt may have a defense that looks a lot like what has come to be expected of the SEC. Here is the bad news: Vanderbilt may have an offense that looks a lot like what has come to be expected of Vanderbilt. It should not lose to Middle Tennessee State though.
Ole Miss -6.5 at Florida
Ole Miss fans have a lot of questions leading up to the game against Florida on Saturday. Is Chad Kelly among the best quarterbacks in the SEC? Do the Rebels have a running game? And can seersucker still be worn in October? Expect the Rebels to get some answers against the Gators. Ole Miss stays unbeaten and covers.
Texas A&M -6.5 vs. Mississippi State
Mississippi State fans are coming to College Station and they are bringing their favorite noisemakers with them. Of course, folks in Texas know all about cowbells. They are just used to seeing them attached to actual cows. Nonetheless, it will be the Aggies making the most noise on Saturday.
Kenutcky vs Eastern Kentucky
No line posted because the Colonels are an FCS team. And of course they are called the Colonels.
LSU -45 vs Eastern Michigan
As a way to prepare for the NFL draft, this week it was suggested that LSU star Leonard Fournette should not play next season. With the way LSU performed for most of last Saturday against Syracuse, it looked like some of Fournette’s teammates decided not to play this season. The game against Eastern Michigan will be much easier though.
UGA -2 vs Alabama
Predictions of Alabama’s demise are like Spiderman movies. It is hard to keep track of exactly how many there have been. As recently as last year some thought Nick Saban’s team was doomed, only to see Alabama rally and once again win the SEC. And of course, the last time UGA had a big win Justin Timberlake was still in a boy band. Yet, at some point shouldn’t UGA fans get rewarded for always waiting until next year?
