At SEC Country, we’ve compiled a rankings system for the conference’s best recruiters for the Class of 2017 based upon current commitments and uncommitted targets using 247Sports’ composite scores of high school recruits.
Our formula multiplies the number of recruits credited to an assistant coach by the average of the recruits’ composite scores. Then that number is multiplied by the average scores of the recruiter’s top 5 uncommitted targets for which he’s the primary recruiter. If he doesn’t have five primary uncommitted targets remaining, we move to targets for whom he is the secondary recruiter. If there still aren’t five, we fill the remaining slots with zeroes.
For every 5-star recruit landed, that recruiter receives a 0.5-point bonus.
Here is the breakdown:
(Number of recruits x average rating)(average rating of five top remaining targets) + (5-star bonus if applicable) = recruiter score
Based upon our formula, these are the 10 best recruiters in the SEC. You’ll notice the omission of Mario Cristobal from this list, as the ace Alabama recruiter took a job at Oregon as the offensive line coach.
10. Sam Pittman, Georgia offensive line coach (LW: NR)
Recruiter score: 5.47
With Cristobal dropping out, Pittman re-enters our space, and he trails one of his co-workers by the slimmest of margins. Both of them get the half-point bonus for bringing in a 5-star recruit. For Pittman, it was Isaiah Wilson. For Schumann, it was Richard LeCounte.
9. Glenn Schumann, Georgia inside linebackers coach (LW: 9)
Recruiter score: 5.48
Schumann has worked hard to land in-state, 4-star inside linebacker Leonard Warner. Warner is expected to join the Bulldogs, but he’s certainly enjoying the recruitment process as he visited Stanford on Friday.
8. Tosh Lupoi, Alabama outside linebackers coach (LW: 8)
Recruiter score: 5.62
Alabama lost the national title game and top recruiter Mario Cristobal in the same week, but the Crimson Tide still has Lupoi. Running back Najee Harris, the top recruit in the country, enrolled at Alabama earlier this week. And if history is any indicator, signing day will be a joyous occasion for Bama fans and Lupoi’s recruiter score.
7. Robert Gillespie, Tennessee running backs coach (LW: 7)
Recruiter score: 5.74
Gillespie had a great early run and still has seven commitments. However, he hasn’t landed a recruit since late October. Maybe he can change the tide in the coming weeks as he still has big name targets remaining.
6. Billy Napier, Alabama wide receivers coach (LW: 10)
Recruiter score: 6.1
Napier had a busy week after the national title game as he visited several uncommitted targets. With both Lane Kiffin and Mario Cristobal leaving the program, Napier likely will inherit some targets and prove his worth in the coming weeks.
5. Clarence McKinney, Texas A&M running backs coach (LW: 5)
Recruiter score: 6.29
McKinney and the Aggies did lose a coveted target, as 4-star defensive back Kendall Sheffield committed to Ohio State. Sheffield was a one-time Alabama player before transferring. The good news? The Aggies lead the charge for 4-star running back Travis Etienne.
4. Dameyune Craig, LSU wide receivers coach (LW: 4)
Recruiter score: 6.34
Craig’s list of commits is impressive, led by 4-star wideout Stephen Guidry. But keep an eye on Craig as his name gets tossed around in connection with the vacant Auburn offensive coordinator position. He played quarterback at Auburn from 1994-97 and served as Co-OC on Gus Malzahn’s staff from 2013-15.
3. Travaris Robinson, South Carolina defensive coordinator (LW: 3)
Recruiter score: 7.17
It’s been a month since Robinson landed a commitment, but the Gamecocks staff will welcome several non-committed 2017 prospects for the three weekends before Feb. 1’s National Signing Day.
2. Vince Marrow, Kentucky tight ends coach (LW: 6)
Recruiter score: 8.05
Marrow lost out on 4-star wide receiver Jaylen Harris after he committed to Ohio State on Friday, but the Wildcats quickly perked up Saturday as 4-star athlete Lynn Bowden chose Kentucky and became the program’s top recruit. Marrow now has 10 commits lined up for UK, tied for most with the No. 1 guy on this list.
1. Tommy Thigpen, Tennessee linebackers coach (Last week: 1)
Recruiter score: 8.10
Thigpen’s rating has been stagnant for weeks, but he’s still sitting atop our rankings. However, with signing day looming, his top targets aren’t expected to become Volunteers.
