While some SEC recruiting classes have better depth than others, the top recruits in each class show that the conference is set to add a number of top players.
As of Wednesday, five SEC schools will add at least 1 5-star recruit. All but 2, Vanderbilt and Missouri, will add a recruit ranked in the top 175 of the 2017 recruiting cycle. And while Alabama will bring in the top prospect in the conference again, there’s plenty of depth behind the Crimson Tide.
For the 2016 class, Jacob Eason and Ben Davis were the top prospects for Georgia and Alabama, respectively. Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Arkansas all saw their top 2016 recruit make the All-SEC freshman team.
* Order of teams is based on where the recruit lands in the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Alabama’s top recruit: 5-star RB Najee Harris
Harris is one of 5 5-star recruits for the Crimson Tide and he comes in at No. 3, topping them all. The Crimson Tide held off a late charge from Michigan to land Harris, a California native. Thanks in part to Harris and his elite cohorts, Alabama likely will have the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class for a seventh year in a row.

Tennessee’s top recruit: 5-star OT Trey Smith
Smith checks in at No. 14 for the 2017 class, and he was a big get for the Volunteers. He’s the top-rated prospect in the state of Tennessee and should help bolster an offensive line that battled injuries and inconsistent play all season.

Georgia’s top recruit: 5-star OT Isaiah Wilson
The Bulldogs’ top commit doesn’t come from the state of Georgia, but rather New York. A Brooklyn native, Wilson is the No. 16 prospect in the class and the No. 5 offensive tackle. Kirby Smart also has commitments from in-state 5-star prospect Richard LeCounte III (No. 22 overall).

LSU’s top recruit: 5-star Jacoby Stevens
Stevens is the top-rated safety in the 2017 class, narrowly edging out LeCounte. He comes in at No. 18 in the class. LSU is still very much in the running for the nation’s top undecided recruit, 5-star defensive tackle Marvin Wilson. Of the SEC commits only Harris and Alabama offensive tackle commit Alex Leatherwood rank higher, as the Texas standout is the No. 6 player in the 2017 recruiting cycle.

Auburn’s top recruit: 5-star OT Calvin Ashley
Like Tennessee and Georgia, Auburn’s top commitment is an offensive tackle. Ashley, who played at St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C., this past season, is among 4 5-star offensive tackles joining the SEC next season. Auburn also got a commitment from 5-star JUCO quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Ashley is the No. 27 player in the class.

Texas A&M’s top recruit: 4-star LB Anthony Hines
While Hines lacks a fifth star, he’s clearly a talented player as the nation’s No. 2 inside linebacker recruit. He should be a welcome addition for a Texas A&M defense that struggled against the run. Hines is the No. 63 ranked recruit in the country.

South Carolina’s top recruit: 4-star CB Jamyest Williams
Despite his 5-foot-9 frame, Williams might be among the best all-around football players in the country. He was a huge get for coach Will Muschamp’s first full Gamecocks recruiting class, though Smart’s staff at Georgia is trying its best to flip the No. 74 recruit in the country.

Florida’s top recruit: 4-star DE Zachary Carter
While Florida hasn’t done a great job on the recruiting trail this year, it was able to land one of the state’s top defensive ends. Carter is the No. 127-ranked recruit and should be able to fill a variety of roles for the Gators.

Ole Miss’ top recruit: 4-star WR D.D. Bowie
The Rebels lose three big time pass catchers in the form of Quincy Adeboyejo, Damore’ea Stringfellow and tight Evan Engram. That should leave an opportunity for Bowie, the nation’s 130th ranked prospect, to compete for early playing time.

Kentucky’s top recruit: 4-star Ath Lynn Bowden
The Wildcats have put together a very strong class with Bowden is its centerpiece. He is the No. 157 prospect in the country and has the chance to help Mark Stoops’ team right away.

Arkansas’ top recruit: 4-star S Montaric Brown
The Razorbacks’ defense was a major problem last season, so the addition of the nation’s No. 163rd-ranked recruit should at least help cover up some of the issues. Secondary coach Paul Rhoads will be the Razorbacks defensive coordinator for the coming season.

Mississippi State’s top recruit: 4-star QB Keytaon Thompson
Could Dan Mullen have found his next Dak Prescott? Like the Dallas Cowboys’ QB, Thompson is a Louisiana native. This dual-threat QB, ranked No. 167 in the class, will have to wait behind Nick Fitzgerald to begin his career.

Missouri’s top recruit: 3-star ATH Daron Davis
Davis is the Tigers’ top-ranked commit at the moment and is No. 351 in the class. Barry Odom’s first full class sits at No. 12 in the SEC and No. 39 nationally.

Vanderbilt’s top recruit: 3-star QB Jacob Free
The Commodores’ top-ranked commit is Free, an Alabama native who comes in at No. 598 in the 2017 recruiting cycle. Vanderbilt has the lowest-ranked class in the SEC, at No. 60 overall.
