The nation’s No. 1 recruit is strongly considering multiple SEC schools, but a Big Ten school may be the team to beat.
While Rashan Gary, a 5-star defensive lineman prospect out of Paramus Catholic (N.J.) High School, hasn’t named a leader to this point, his mother’s recent comments certainly point to one school as her favorite.
Jennifer Coney expressed her admiration for Michigan in an interview with SEC Country this week.
Academics is a big sticking point with Coney when it comes to her son’s looming college decision, and she has been most impressed with Michigan’s academic pitch.
“They (Michigan) have the Ross School of Business. The way their academic is structured I just feel that the weight of the degree is better,” Coney told SEC Country. “That’s my feeling. I may be wrong. That’s just how I feel. I feel Michigan’s academic plan, plan for success, not even for football players but as for student body in general is just important.”
Coney had recently displayed concerns about Auburn’s academic regimen before Gary took an official visit to the school this weekend for the Alabama game. She also said she had not gotten to know Alabama coach Nick Saban much because of his busy schedule.
Gary is considering both Alabama and Auburn, as well as UGA, Clemson and LSU, among others. But none of those aforementioned concerns apply to Michigan. In fact, she even called coach Jim Harbaugh her favorite coach to interact with.
“He’s (Harbaugh) an entertaining guy but he is a recruiter,” Coney said. “When it comes to colleges the line coach usually recruits you. Even though we speak to (Defensive line) Coach (Greg) Mattison. I don’t know if it’s just Rashan, I don’t know other people’s recruiting stuff and I don’t care. But for me, Jim Harbaugh has recruited Rashan and me.
“I’m sure Rashan has talked to coach Mattison and (Defensive coordinator) (D.J.) Drukin. But I get a call from Jim Harbaugh checking in on me. That’s the difference at Michigan for me.”
Gary took an official visit to Michigan in September and has also taken official visits to Ole Miss and Auburn. The 5-star’s next official visit will be to Southern California on Jan. 15, while he is considering Alabama, UGA, LSU and Clemson, among others, for his fifth and final official visit.
Gary is considered a 60 percent Michigan lean, according to 247Sports’ Crystal Ball predictions.
