Even if the games didn’t mean much by the end of the year, SEC teams played in two of the best matchups of this college football season.
Sports Illustrated ranked the top 10 games of 2016. And the SEC was represented in two games of the top five: Arkansas-TCU and Tennessee-Georgia.
The Vols’ 34-31 win over the Bulldogs came in at No. 3. The final minute of the game featured two go-ahead Mary passes in one of the most dramatic finishes of the year.
“Both teams would plummet due to injuries and generally forgettable play after this thriller in October,” SI’s Colin Becht wrote, “but the final 30 seconds of Tennessee and Georgia’s matchup in Athens (made it) the best SEC game of the season … even if the SEC East offered hardly any good football all year.”
Arkansas’ 41-38 double-overtime win over TCU ranked fifth on the list, but it didn’t look very exciting early. The Razorbacks got out to a 20-7 lead and looked like they were going to cruise the rest of the game.
“But Kenny Hill and TCU’s offense came alive late, and it took a two-minute drill from Arkansas quarterback Austin Allen in just his second start and a two-point conversion (on a wide receiver reverse pass to Allen) to tie the game,” Becht wrote. “The Razorbacks seized momentum with a blocked last-second field goal and prevailed in double overtime as Allen carried Horned Frogs defenders into the end zone.”
