The college football season is nearly upon. That means the preseason rankings are in full effect. Sports Illustrated just released their edition, which is loaded with plenty of SEC teams.
Led by Alabama at No. 1, SI tabbed six SEC teams in the Top 25.
Auburn (No. 10) is the other SEC team to crack the top 10, followed by LSU (No. 13), Georgia (No. 16), Florida (No. 18) and Texas A&M (No. 25).
Alabama at the top comes as no surprise, considering its NCAA-best nine players ranked in SI’s Top 100. Those players are: QB Jalen Hurts, WR Calvin Ridley, RB Bo Scarbrough, OT Jonah Williams, DT Da’Shawn Hand, DT Da’Ron Payne, LB Shaun Dion Hamilton, CB Minkah Fitzpatrick, S Ronnie Harrison.
Auburn (with SI Top 100 players DE Marlon Davidson, QB Jarrett Stidham, RB Kamryn Pettway) is projected to have a shot at the SEC West title when they face Alabama in the Iron Bowl on Nov. 25.
LSU is tabbed at No. 13 in large part due to sophomore defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence, whom SI says “has the stuff to be one of the SEC’s best defensive linemen this fall.”
SI believes Georgia will go “as far as [Terry] Godwin—and its other wide receivers—can carry them.”
SI thinks Florida’s defense can be ”rejuvenated” enough under new DC Randy Shannon to propel the Gators to an SEC East title.
Texas A&M hasn’t gotten much love from the prognosticators up until this point but SI slots the Aggies in at No. 25 because of the potential of sophomore running back Trayveon Williams.
The highly anticipated clash between Alabama and Florida State is slated for Sept. 2 from the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA.
