A few weeks ago, South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner reached out to a handful of commits urging them to keep their pledges as the program searched for a new coach.
On Sunday, Tanner and Co. found their guy.
According to multiple reports, former Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp will be named South Carolina’s coach in the coming days. The recent Florida head coach served one season under Gus Malzahn’s direction only to find himself headed to Columbia, S.C., a year later to take over for interim coach Shawn Elliott.
As lead man for the Gators from 2011-14, Muschamp posted a modest 28-21 record, including an 11-2 season in 2012.
Several Gamecocks commits have been on edge since Steve Spurrier’s sudden resignation in October. SEC Country reached out to a handful of recruits to get their take on their possible new coach.
Brandon Mcllwain, QB, Council Rock North (Newtown, Pa..) — “I like it. I will be discussing it with my family and doing research. But I like the hire.”
Will Putnam, OL, Hickory Ridge (Harrisburg, N.C.) — “I’m interested. I need to head back down to Columbia for another visit and I need to meet with his staff. It’s a step in the right direction for us if I had to sum it all up. There are still a lot of unknowns.”
Kelvin Harmon, WR, Palmyra (Palmyra, N.J.) — “I have no words for now.”
Chris Smith, CB, South Pointe (Rock Hill, S.C.) — “It’s just nice to know who the head coach is so I can build a relationship with him. I believe he can bring the fire back into the program.”
CJ Freeman, RB, Northern Guilford (Greensboro, N.C.) — “I’m glad they finally hired someone. I’m taking my official this weekend, so, I’ll know then.”
Tre Jackson, WR, University Lab (Baton Rouge, La.) — “I think Muschamp is a great hire for the South Carolina program. He’s an SEC guy. He’s a top defensive mind and a great recruiter. I’m sure he’ll have success.”
Stay tuned as we will have more reactions.
