It’s the peak of list season, and Sporting News joined the fun by ranking coaches for the coming fall.
The outlet underwent an ambitious endeavor by ranking coaches from No. 1 to No. 130. (For what it’s worth, San Jose State’s Brent Brennan came in last and Alabama’s Nick Saban was first.)
But one of the most interesting things about the list was the placement of LSU coach Ed Orgeron. He’s entering his first full season as the Tigers’ coach after serving as LSU’s leader on an interim basis last year. Sporting News slotted Orgeron at No. 47, which places him ahead of Will Muschamp (No. 50), Mark Stoops (No. 65), Derek Mason (No. 67) and Barry Odom (No. 70).
The jury’s still out on Orgeron’s head-coaching abilities. He’s 22-29 as a head coach during his career. His most successful stints came in interim roles with USC and LSU, when he went 6-2 in both instances. He was underwhelming at Ole Miss from 2005-07, when he went 10-25.
We’ll see if Orgeron can lift LSU in the SEC West. It will be fun to watch the Tigers, for sure.
