KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Forgive Tennessee and Kentucky if their collective gaze dwindles south on Saturday.
The Volunteers (6-3, 2-3 SEC) host the Wildcats (5-4, 4-3) at 12 p.m. ET Saturday at Neyland Stadium. It’s a game that both teams need to win — but they also need some help down in Gainesville. Tennessee and Kentucky look up at Florida in the SEC East standings; a loss by the Gators to South Carolina on Saturday would go a long way in an SEC East shakeup.
For Kentucky, a win over Tennessee and a loss by Florida would put the Wildcats a step closer to being the unlikeliest of SEC East champions. Kentucky would still need Florida to lose its conference finale, but that comes a week later at LSU.
For Tennessee, a win over Kentucky and a loss by Florida would put the Volunteers in a position to use their head-to-head tiebreaker over the Gators to win the East. That’s assuming, of course, that Tennessee wins its final two conference games against Missouri and Vanderbilt.
