The annual Kentucky-Kansas matchup is always the headliner, pitting two perennial national title contenders against each other. Kentucky added the No. 2 recruiting class in the nation, while Kansas added the No. 1 overall player. Sparks should fly as usual.
The SEC/Big 12 Challenge features 10 teams that played in the NCAA tournament last season. Last year’s SEC darling Texas A&M will travel to face off against West Virginia’s aggressive havoc defense in Morgantown, W.Va. Florida will also try to get back on track in Mike White’s second season in Gainesville, but has a tough task against an Oklahoma team that played in last season’s Final Four.
Vanderbilt has plenty to prove, as Bryce Drew – brother of Baylor coach Scott Drew – takes over the program for his first season. The Commodores lost in the play-in round of the NCAA tournament.
Iowa State, Baylor and Texas are all Big 12 teams that could be nationally ranked when these games come around. Alabama, South Carolina, Missouri and Mississippi State will not take part in the challenge this season.
The Big 12 has owned the SEC/Big 12 Challenge in all three years of its existence. The Big 12 went 7-3 last season and has accumulated a dominant 20-10 record in those three years.
