Alabama coach Nick Saban has his team in the driver’s seat to repeat as national champions.
That’s according to the latest Vegas odds, shared by ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, which pegged the Crimson Tide as favorites (9/2 odds) to recapture the College Football Playoff trophy in January. They were joined by Tennessee (12/1) and LSU (15/1) as SEC teams with a decent shot of winning it all.
No. 1 Alabama leading the pack is no surprise after it destroyed Southern Cal on a neutral field, 52-6. The Trojans were outgained offensively 465-194, went 4-for-18 on third down and never even sniffed the end zone.
Tennessee and LSU maintaining good standing in Vegas might be a little more eye-opening. The Vols looked like a mess offensively as they edged past Appalachian State in a 20-13 home overtime scare. The Tigers, meanwhile, lost a 16-14 clunker to Wisconsin at Lambeau Field. Likewise, their offense was an eyesore.
However, both squads are talented and experienced enough across the board that they’re still well-positioned to rebound from these early stumbles.
The pressure will be on Brandon Harris (12 of 21, 131 yards passing, 1 TD, 2 INTs) and Josh Dobbs (16 of 29, 192 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) to rally their units in the coming weeks.
